First you hear them, then you see them

Sandhill cranes fly in a “V” formation at a fairly high altitude.  The image is faint as they move from right to left across the screen.

We have been lucky to be outdoors in the early afternoon frequently this spring.  It appears to be the best time to see them in flight…over a half dozen times (central Indiana).

View one of Indiana’s greatest wildlife spectacles at Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area. Each fall, thousands of Sandhill Cranes visit the area’s shallow marshes.

I was introduced to sandhill cranes 20 years ago at the Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area.  They feed and stay overnight during their migration.  Large groups are VERY loud and not a pleasant chorus.  However, it is VERY impressive and you remember their chatter.  I love spotting them on the move.  You hear them first!

Few businesses have survived two world wars, the Great Depression and a recession, but the venerable Old Hickory Furniture Co. has persevered by turning out rustic lodge furniture.Legend has it that North Carolina native Billy Richardson and his father made hickory sapling hoop chairs for The Hermitage, the home of President Andrew Jackson, and used Jackson’s nickname, Old Hickory, as the company name. Richardson moved to Indiana and began selling his chairs in Martinsville in the 1890s. The company was founded in an abandoned Martinsville church in 1894, andit incorporated in 1898 when it started producing a full line of hickory sapling furniture.

MOROCCO, Ind. – A bison herd is now roaming a northwestern Indiana prairie that the Nature Conservancy has spent two decades restoring.The conservation group released 23 bison from South Dakota into the Kankakee Sands prairie restoration area on Saturday. The Nature Conservancy has planted nearly 6,500 acres of prairie at that Newton County site since 1996.The bison are confined to a 1,060-acre pasture at Kankakee Sands. Hiking is now prohibited in that area.Land steward Tony Capizzo says the bison should increase the site’s plant and animal diversity by grazing and disturbing the soil.Visitors to the area about 50 miles northwest of Lafayette can watch the bison in action from an elevated viewing area located just off U.S. 41 near the town of Morocco.
