Birthstones

5 May

My sister intends to wear her son’s birthstone as a pendant in honor of his wedding next month. Our mother recommended a jeweler for the blue topaz pendant.  The selection was made, when it occurred to me that I also have a December birthday.  I should wear my birthstone ring from my grandmother for the wedding.  One thing leads to another.  My ring does not have blue topaz stones.  My ring has aquamarine stones.  That mystery will go unsolved.  However, we learned some amazing facts from Wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthstone

Both the Old and New Testament make references to 12 stones in Exodus 28:30 (Aaron’s breastplate and the 12 tribes of Israel) and Revelation 21:19-20 (Foundation Stones for New Jerusalem).  I found another relevant passage while reading The Church in the Book of Esther.  Ezekiel 28: 12-15 includes “on the day you were created they were prepared.”

Through the centuries birthstone traditions have evolved.  The link for the Wikipedia reference includes six different lists of birthstones by month.  No wonder we are confused about the correct December birthstone.  Check out the lovely Georgian poems from the 1870s (also in the link).

Eve needs Emergency Exit!

“Eve” (for Christmas Eve 2006, when we found her in a cattle trailer) does not belong on the white table-cloth!  So, there are a couple of things wrong here…I am late putting away Christmas decorations and Eve should not consider playing with the M&M dispenser.

No harm done…this may be next year’s Christmas card photo.

Treasure chest

24 Nov

My collection of pins had been in a dozen places gathering dust.  Today they are framed.  This is my personal “pin interest”.  My “treasure chest” is a memory jogger from decades of work, vacations, school, pets, hobbies, autos and awards.

Celebrating Charity Cat Comeback

13 Jul

Mid May test results of advanced kidney disease came back for Shelby.  Too young!  This couldn’t be his ninth life.  Thanks to internet research, we found PetWellbeing.com and their Kidney Support Gold liquid remedy.  Shelby has gotten drops every evening since May 22nd and now owns the front porch dawn to dusk.  The fresh air and sunshine are taking his recovery to a new level.  In honor of his comeback, Elfcroft has photos to share of his interest in charity projects.

Today he is alive and recovering on the porch.

Hopefully, he is just on life number 5 or 6.  He definitely had used one life when he found me in 2005.  That’s another story.

Oh Happy Day!

31 Mar

Not only it is Easter the Holiest of Christian days, but for Elfcroft today is preparation to ship homemade children’s clothes to support Helping Hands Touching Hearts mission in South Africa.  Content in the photos is the culmination of work over the last six months (my day job, etc has priority).

Let's go!

Let’s go!

We did it!  We filled the 1.11 cu ft box with 10 pairs of shorts (4 homemade shown above in brown fabric), 9 skirts and tops in two different sizes and 10 girls dresses in various sizes…..and Shelby gets to stay home to help with the next project.

One of the endearing things about Sidney at Helping Hands Touching Hearts is that she especially wants the girls clothing to be pretty.  Also, these items will be delivered personally by Sidney, Wayne and C.J.  Here are some photos on their website.

Report on the 5th annual gathering to prepare gift bags for the women housed at the Wheeler Mission Center for Women and Children.  Kathy Layne has called on friends, neighbors and co-workers to give 65 generously stuffed Christmas gift bags for the women/mothers at the shelter.  A good time was had by all!

From the front porch

On the porch

Shelby joined me on the front porch this Sunday (Father’s Day) morning.  I was out at 6:00 am for a 3 mile walk to beat the heat.  The sunrise was glorious with pinks and purples.  The technical data from the walk was recorded on my Garmin 305 including heart rate.  So after I downloaded the data and while the Garmin was charging, Shelby and I watched for birds flying into the pondless bubbling fountain.  A hummingbird paused long enough for a drink!  I thought about the spirea shrubs that Mam-ma Tuggle had for years in front of her porch, the dragonfly sculptures from Kingsgate Studio and the coreopsis that I got a couple of years ago at Girls Night Out at Avon Gardens.  Great view!
