Grouping

Update:  A photographer’s dilemma_finding a theme for a photo or a photo for a theme.

This photo was in need of a theme.  It has been brought to my attention the classical translation for I Ching hexagram no. 8 is “holding together”.  To prepare this series of photographs, I went to the internet for a quick list of translations.  No. 8 is also translated “joining”.  From there, “grouping” was included.

Although I like this illustration for “grouping”, it does not work for “holding together”.  A future post will attempt illustrating “holding together”.

Moonbeams and Garden Dreams 2

21 Jul

The metaphorical seed for a Moon garden was planted when reading Mary Francis’ article in the Indianapolis Star June 9, 2001.  The garden manifested in 2005.  It was designed and installed by Avon Gardens.  The entrance to the patio is from the master bedroom.  The golden quartz flagstone had the surprise quality of reflecting moonlight.  The plantings on the perimeter are all white.  Tulips, iris, perennial geraniums, lilies, White Swan coneflower, crab apple, …..

“One of the best things about moon gardens is that they lure us out at night to enjoy the fragrance of flowers that might be missed during the day.  When it’s 8 p.m. and the sun’s going down, the fragrances come up.  You miss them during the day.  There are rich aromas at night, Booher said, adding that sometimes strong sunlight can burn off the fragrance or winds during the day can carry away the scents.”

Who carved, or when these initials were carved in the tree at the Town Hall Park?  A moth, too?

This subject not only captured my attention for my alphabet photography series, but also because my dear friends Jerry and Kathy are celebrating their 41st wedding anniversary next month.  Best wishes for many more!

Moonbeams and Garden Dreams 1

14 Jul

It was 3 a.m. and unusually bright outside from lightning of stormy skies.  The night sky will be at its darkest Thursday July 16th with a full new moon.  On July 31st this year, we will have a full blue moon, which is the phenomena of having two full moons in the same month (last occurring in 2012).

The inspiration for the master bedroom patio garden came to me June 9, 2001, fourteen years ago.  Mary Francis wrote “Moonbeams and garden dreams” for the Indianapolis Star.  It was my introduction to moon gardens.  White flowers, silver and variegated foliage may be subtle by day, however they glow in moonlight as does the golden quartz flagstone.

Anemonies

” ‘The moon garden is all about illuminating the night,’ said Grimm, owner of Kids in Bloom, a local heirloom seed company.”

“For some, the evening may be the best time to enjoy a garden__with long hours, some people rarely get to see the garden in daytime.  Why not plan for moonlight viewing?”  GREAT question!

Garden

This garden spot has been called the kitchen garden, then herb garden.  Twenty five years ago it was two 8’X8′ plots separated by a stone path.  It got plenty of afternoon sun.  As trees grew and  shaded the area, vegetable plants did not fare well.  Several years ago the area was enlarged, bounded by the block retaining wall and filled with top soil.  The containers are temporary homes for plants till fall planting.  Tomato plants are the tallest.  Herbs include oregano, lemon balm, horehound, mint, rue, basil, parsley and catnip!  The coneflowers are particularity bold this summer.  All in all, this is the best season of 25!

Blast from the Past

Today in history, 1868, the Sholes and Glidden type-writer was patented.  Patent number 79,265 sold for $12,000.  Production began March 1, 1873 by Remington and Sons.  According to Wikipedia there are over 50 iterations of design development spanning centuries.  This is an outstanding example of continuous design improvement in action.

The large dense leaves on hostas block sunlight, which discourages weeds in the plantings…that is a blessing!
