Friday Photo: Eve, let’s read a book

14 Oct
Let's read!

Let’s read!

Our alcove with LED pot lights is “purrrfect” for reading “old-fashioned” books.  Eve joined me in the adjacent chair for each chapter.

This week we read the old-fashioned format…paper, hard cover, jacket of Legends and Lies, The Patriots by David Fisher.  We recommend reading this compelling history of the founding of the United States, especially in an election season.  Our politics were messy then, as now.

International Day of the Girl Child (United Nations)

11 Oct

October 11, 2016:  International Day of the Girl Child

Let girls be girls!  United Nations Women’s website identifies child marriage as a global problem thrwarting women’s development mentally (education is suspended), physically (bear children too early) and spiritually (vulnerable to violence).

Every day is a day for girl power @ Days for Girls International.

Days for Girls International developed reusable feminine hygiene kits (in bright colors and bold patterns) produced and delivered via crowdsourcing.  Check out DfGI 2015’s annual report…the photos are amazing:

Elfcroft has shipped components supporting 195 kits since 2014.  Plus, we have a head start on a 2017 shipment.  Check out a sample of the work:

This Houzz link has examples of beautiful decorator applications as well as the “runners up”.

Not only does Elfcroft have a couch upholstered in the “world’s ugliest” color Pantone 448C (brown/olive green blend), but also “favorite” wardrobe items!  Think:  Green sea turtles.

Composting is both a dirty job and “Black gold” to enrich vegetable garden….this season’s yield…100 pounds!

For fifteen years, I have used a three step process to mitigate the slime and smell of kitchen waste.  This year I added a fourth step.

  1. Compost kitchen and garden waste (very slimy and smelly)
  2. Compost yard waste (primarily trimmings of perennial flowers).
  3. Add kitchen compost to yard waste = black gold
  4. Top off with ashes from fire pit for enrichment

All gardening starts with dirt.  Yes, it is less expensive and messy to buy compost by the bag at garden centers.  Homemade is better.

“Henry Folger’s Obsessive Hunt for Shakespeare’s First Folio”

Author:  Andrea Mays 2015

I give it Five Stars!

*Inside story of the rise and fall of Standard Oil, the source of economical fuel that launched the automotive industry and the source of Henry’s income for investing in rare books.

*Inside story of the publication of Shakespeare’s plays after his death, in an era when oral performances were not written (His life’s work may have been lost forever.)….typesetting, proof reading, paper, binding

*Inside story of the systematic acquisition of “Shakespeare’s Folios”…research, relationships, negotiations, privacy, delivery, storage…

*Inside story of an amazing marriage and mutual passion for literature.

*Inside story of the wisdom to transition from collecting to developing an extraordinary library to preserve and share the world’s greatest collection of all things Shakespeare.

Recommended reading for everyone interested in libraries, English Literature, Shakespeare, merits of vertically integrated corporations, strategy and negotiations for developing rare collection, early methods of printing/book binding, early twentieth century travel, biography developed from personal correspondence, even early twentieth century golf!

Indy Star: What in the world is IN Light IN?

28 Aug

From Indy Star

What in the world is IN Light IN?

http://indy.st/2bsirt9

No, IN Light IN is not a laser show.”We will not be having a single laser in this light festival,” said Joanna Nixon, who is helping to produce the event. “Instantly when I say light festival, I think what pops in people’s minds is a laser light show. Indianapolis has not ever seen anything like this, ever.”But what, exactly, is “this”?”We are really treating this festival very similar to a contemporary art exhibition,” Nixon said. So, here’s the gist: IN Light IN is a free two-day, 2.5-mile tour through more than 25 interactive light works of art along the Downtown Canal from the Indiana Statehouse north to 11th Street and stretching east along the Indianapolis Cultural Trail to the American Legion Mall. Many of the artworks put the attendee in them, either through projection, becoming a living canvas or controlling the lighted piece. Nixon expects 15,000 people to visit the festival each of the two nights, though there is a potential for more.

Unintentional…. furniture theme this month, thanks to inspiration from Houzz Ideabooks.  My August 2nd post featured a reproduction “Ice Box” used for shoe storage/dresser plus a link to “Savvy Shoe Storage”.  On August 16th, I posted a photo of a pair of upholstered barrel back chairs paired with link to “Antiques Today” from Houzz.

Here I go again.  My favorite small desk from the Houzz Ideabook is number 4, the drop-down secretary from Pottery Barn.  Surprise! maybe not… I have this small cherry drop-down writing desk of my grandfather’s in our guest room.  It is paired with a chair featuring needle point seat cover made by my mother.

Friday Photos: Old School

19 Aug

Old school…..decades of albums, prints (multiple sizes), boxes, negatives, framed….meets digital.  This project is brought to you by my “27 cubic feet” reduction goal (of personal papers and stuff).  Photo archives account for nearly 3 cubic feet.

  1. Sort  2.  Scan  3.  Save for others

Scan, scan, scan….also, rather than disposing of most of the vacation, birthday and holiday prints…I chose three albums to reconfigure with photos selected especially for three adult children.  Perhaps that just stalls my effort or mission.  My hope is it will bring smiles and fond memories…. without the hours of searching to find their precious moments.  😉
