Cheers!  I am on track with a 2018 New Year’s Resolution (that I never considered until last year)…to read the entire Bible. Late last year Doreen Virtue introduced on Instagram two One Year Bibles formatted Chronologically as well as one with Old and New Testament, plus Psalm and Proverb selection for each day of the year.  Doreen posts a 30 minute video on Instagram daily for the respective readings.  Video archives are loaded on VIMEO.

Believe it or not, I find reading both versions of the One Year Bible helps retention.  Also, pairing the New Testament with the Old Testament readings illuminates

St Augustine’s quote “The New Testament lies concealed in the Old, the Old lies revealed in the New.”

The Old Testament is best known for laws…over 600 in Deuteronomy.  Many of the rules relate to matters of justice, public health, accuracy in weights and measures, land grants and subjects that we take for granted today.  Detailed building instructions were given for Noah’s Ark.  I was surprised with the detailed instructions for constructing the Ark of the Covenant, which according to Samuel 1 was eventually captured by the Philistines.

I found the Book of Job compelling…40 chapters long and in a manner of speaking, asks “Why does bad things happen to good people?”  Spoiler alert!  Sometimes it is a test.

I describe the One Year Bible with Old, New Testament, Psalms and Proverbs each day as a “matrix format” which the  helps with recognition of prophecy and foreshadowing.  I am surprised with the frequency that verses from Deuteronomy are quoted in the New Testament.

Shocking!  I am on track with a 2018 New Year’s Resolution (that I never considered until last year)…to read the entire Bible.  What brought that on?  Completing Cosmic Numbers and 17 Equations that Changed the World developed diligence with difficult material.  Reading Flash and A Year of Biblical Womanhood engaged my curiosity.  Then…

Book Review: Sewing can be Dangerous by SR Mallery

25 Apr

Sewing can be Dangerous and other small threads…the title grabbed my attention.  As much time as I have spent sewing over the years, I never thought of it as dangerous.  Sooo…how is sewing dangerous?  S.R. Mallery’s collection of eleven short stories have fascinating characters from eleven times and places.

Danger exists in conditions in the garment district, delivering a warning message, communicating directions, disguising passports…to name a few.  My favorite short story is “Precious Gifts” set in the Washington Territory in the 1870s.    Mama bought a new Singer Perpendicular Action Sewing Machine.  You have to read the story to find out why she set up her new machine in the corn field.  The story tells of her passion for sewing, aiding a young Chinook Indian on his Spirit Quest, exchanging gifts and adverting a conflict due to her quilt making magic.  Love it!

Barrel back chairs

Barrel back chairs

This alcove was originally configured for cabinets/buffet in the dining area.  The cabinets were long ago used in a modification of the kitchen floor plan.  Today the alcove (with pot/can lighting) has just enough space to “show case” these barrel back chairs in their new life for reading and conversation.
