Retreat @ home

11 Nov

“A Sisterhood of Sheds” was published last month in the Indianapolis Star.  How delightful!  “She Sheds” are spaces detached from the house, decorated to be a sanctuary for the woman of the house.  A network of shed owners from around the world are connected by a Facebook group called “She Shed Sisters” with 1350 members!  Creative!  Inspirational!  Even practical.

Reminds me of the lovely book Chris Madden published in 1998 A Room of Her Own featuring high-profile clients with stunning photography of their most personal spaces.

Perhaps…there is a New Year’s resolution in these ideas….

Friday Photos: I Ching No. 57 Wind and No. 58 Lake

6 Nov

There are many layers of meanings associated with I Ching.  I captured some of them on my I Ching inspiration page.  Hexagram 57 and 58 are both double trigrams for wind and lake respectively……soooo how does a wall become a good match for wind?  This particular wall located at the Clinch Mountain overlook…windy; and part of the text refers to the penetrating nature of wind….well I was fortunate get this image of shadow and wall as a vanishing point or penetrating image.

Yoga Mat Bag Project: Crossing the finish line?

3 Nov

I purchased several boxes of yoga mats left unsold from a holiday marketing promotion.   That would be a total of 65.  The mats come in bold blue, green, purple, pink and gray.   18 got custom bags and found good homes.  Leaving 47 in the closet.  (7 will stay in my stash for the time being.) 40 mats now have matching bags to be donated to a local women’s shelter.

The inspiration for Yoga Mat Bags came from One Yard Wonders by Rebecca Yaker and Patricia Hoskins.  Yoga classes are one of my favorite activities.  Making bags for mats… natural synergy of my interests.  Now that I engaged phase 2, the best, delightful part of sewing yoga mat bags is working with 20 beautiful colors and patterns of fabric.

From Dec 2013—–>to Oct 2015  Not much happened because my stitched service was dedicated to Days for Girls International and a “shower caddy” project for Wheeler Mission.  Thanks to Pimla Ponderings to nudge me to complete UFOs (unfinished objects).

The concept is water flowing without interruption (in spite of obstacles) and reaches its destination…sounds like success to me.

Friday Photo: I Ching No. 7 The Army

23 Oct

The classical interpretation for No. 7 is “The Army” as in stored military strength stored up in the people.  The contemporary translation is “leading”.  I chose this photo to represent both translations.

This article suggests there are three styles (Dewey decimal system not included):  bookstore, theme and rainbow order.  After paring down and shuffling my books in July, I went with “theme” bookshelves.  Laura Gaskill has great advice with photos for oversize books, plan to rotate, display covers, care for rare books, rack ’em (children’s), vertical or stacks, accent with bookends and last but not least….leave room for more!

Coffee table books

Coffee table books

My oversize books span decades with The Incredible Year 1968 being a clue.  Kenny Rogers, Your Friends and Mine was a gift from my sister in 1987.  She had Kenny Rogers autograph it for me.  Tennessee, Virginia and Indiana have been home.  Hmmmm….I need a rotation plan for these books on the coffee table.

I love bookends and often buy them as gifts.  My shelves are so full, I don’t often use bookends myself.  However on my desk is a single brass one of a dog and a cat on a stack of books.  My grandmother used it for years.  Office assistant Eve…insists her photo is better than a brass cat!

Dedication of Pat Summit statue @ University of Tennessee Nov 2013

The classical definition of hexagram No 5 is waiting.  The contemporary definition is attending.  I chose this photo to relate to both definitions.  Even the posture of Pat Summit’s bronze statue illustrates waiting/attending as she did on the sidelines of the University of Tennessee Lady Vols champion basketball teams.

From Houzz: Personal libraries around the world

13 Oct

AWESOME!  Outstanding photos of the libraries and owners!

  • Personal interviews from 11 countries:

Canada, France, Italy, Spain, New Zealand, Denmark, Japan, UK, Russia, Germany, Sweden

  • Described as:

Two story, Hallway, Nest, Stacks, Nook, Floating, Cave, Home, Geometric, Corner, With a View

  • Size:

300 to 6500 books

A couple of the interviews had comments about digital libraries.  Merging digital and paper was on my mind when I posted “It started when…” on July 28, 2015…part the evolution of my personal library that involved clearing obsolescence and sorting.

Enjoy!
