Support of hospice care with prayer shawls

18 Apr

The season of Lent concluded Easter Sunday as did this project offering prayer shawls for hospice care ministry.

The challenge using this bulky acrylic/nylon yard from my stash is that all the edges rolled!  I am grateful for the knitters who have posted instructions for “blocking” on the web.  This solution required some trial and error.  These small shawls got straightened out.  I will avoid buying bulky yarn in the future.

One more thing!  I had this nice “satchel” style bag…marketing material from an exposition.  Well…It occurred to me that a large appliqué (from my shower caddie project stash) would cover the advertising.  It is just the right size to hold seven folded “blocked” shawls.

Well…I meant two/three more things.

Last month, I was introduced to the pattern for these caps.  Two of them now belong to long time friends who are undergoing chemotherapy.

May God bless everyone during these difficult times.

Alleluia! Happy Easter!

Tree Story

“Eve” was a Christmas present to us Christmas “Eve” of 2006.  (She should NOT be on the table cloth.)

If trees could talk….

The six sparkly cane shaped ornaments were my first purchase (early 1970s).  I remember the Christmas Shop well.  It was July in North Carolina!  The shop was cool!  Full size trees were decorated to the max.  Enchanting.  Delightful.

According to the history on their website, they downsized and closed the business for 90 days in 2008.  It has since reopened and sounds delightful as I remember.

For more than twenty years I had fresh-cut Christmas trees, they are not talking.  About twenty-five years ago, when “more was more”, I bought this little tree to be a “theme” tree in my master bedroom.  The vision:  white lights and blown glass ornaments.  That plan was in effect for several years.  When my stepdaughter insisted on decorating a Christmas tree each Thanksgiving weekend, she claimed this little one for her room the next 10 years.  The decorations were all of her choosing.

After a seven-year storage period, our littlest tree regularly appears with ornaments selected to remind us of our angels Anne, Grandma Sophie, Kathy and beloved cat Shelby.  Merry Christmas to all!

These beautiful students sang, recognized each veteran by name with a pin and card, and applauded.  A slide show featured larger than life photos of each veteran.  (Charles Frazee had five photos :).  Each grade sang the song for the Army, Navy, AirForce, Marine Corp and Coast Guard.  The first graders sang the Marine Corp Hymn.  The fourth graders finished with “Anchors Away”.  “Taps” was played to honor those who died in service.

Very proud day to be an American!  God bless the USA.

Indy Star: Indiana-made furniture still provides rustic comfort

Indiana-made furniture still provides rustic comfort

http://indy.st/2eBlFxg

Few businesses have survived two world wars, the Great Depression and a recession, but the venerable Old Hickory Furniture Co. has persevered by turning out rustic lodge furniture.Legend has it that North Carolina native Billy Richardson and his father made hickory sapling hoop chairs for The Hermitage, the home of President Andrew Jackson, and used Jackson’s nickname, Old Hickory, as the company name. Richardson moved to Indiana and began selling his chairs in Martinsville in the 1890s. The company was founded in an abandoned Martinsville church in 1894, andit incorporated in 1898 when it started producing a full line of hickory sapling furniture.
